I found this fascinating quote today:
Sometimes we would not buy anything more than a bag of jelly beans, or something else that did not seem to warrant a 6-block hike in the summer heat. But the time spent was great. My mother also shopped without me, when she needed to buy the essentials or groceries or things for our house. This was not shopping to me and I hated "going to the store".
